2006 Safety and Security Features Glossary

Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS): Senses and prevents wheel lockup, offering improved steering control under extreme braking and/or slippery conditions.

Advanced Multi-Stage Air Bag System: Offering enhanced protection for a wider range of occupants, this system is designed to also identify the size of an occupant - using the Occupant Classification System (OCS)  - based primarily on weight for the front passenger seat.

All-Speed Traction Control System: Senses drive-wheel slip and applies individual brakes to the slipping wheel(s) and can reduce excess engine power until traction is regained.

Auto-Reverse Sun Roof: An advanced sensing system that automatically engages and reverses the sunroof (to the open position).

Auto-Reverse Windows: This system automatically engages and reverses the window (to the down position.

BeltAlert: Enhanced seat-belt reminder system. If a vehicle is driven without the driver being properly belted, the system will periodically activate a chime and illuminate an icon in the instrument cluster to remind the driver to buckle up.

Brake Assist: The vehicle senses a panic brake condition and applies maximum braking power, providing the shortest possible stopping distance.

Brake/Park Interlock: Prevents an automatic transmission or transaxle from being shifted out of Park unless the brake pedal is applied.

Brake Traction Control System (BTCS): Helps to keep driving wheels from spinning during acceleration from a stop or during slow speeds by applying individual brakes to the slipping wheel(s).

Child Seat Anchor System: Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) eases installation of compatible aftermarket child seats.

Child Protection Rear Door Locks: Allow customers to disable the rear door, inside-release handle.  A small lever on the door-shut face operates this feature.

Constant Force Retractors (CFR): The front seat belts include a mechanical device designed to distribute the force of a seat belt according to the load or force exerted on it. This technology is designed to force-limit the belt system and gradually release seat-belt webbing in a controlled manner.|

Crumple Zones:  An area of the vehicle that is designed to compress during an accident to absorb energy from an impact, preventing transfer of that energy to the occupants.

Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM):   This feature is an extension of the Electronic Stability Program (ESP). It uses the input from the ESP sensors to anticipate if the vehicle is at risk of entering a potential roll situation and reacts immediately, attempting to prevent the situation from even beginning. It applies the brakes individually and modulates throttle position as needed to attempt avoiding the roll situation.

Electronic Stability Program (ESP): Electronic Stability Program enhances driver control and helps maintain directional stability under all conditions. It provides the greatest benefit in critical driving situations such as turns and is especially valuable when driving on mixed surface conditions such as snow, ice or gravel. If there's a discernible difference between what the driver asks through the steering and the vehicle's path, ESP applies selective braking and throttle input to put the vehicle back onto the driver's intended path.

Energy-Absorbing Steering Column: Manual-adjust steering columns utilize two hydroformed coaxial tubes that can move relative to each other to allow the column to move forward for enhanced energy-absorption during a crash.  The power-adjust steering columns employs a calibrated bending element that deforms during column stroke for optimal energy management.

Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS):  In the event of an accident, this system makes it easier for emergency personnel to see and reach the occupants by turning on the interior lighting and unlocking the doors after air bag deployment. It also shuts off the flow of fuel to the engine.

Four-Wheel BTCS: This system is used on Jeep 4x4 vehicles for optimum traction on- and off-road. It senses drive-wheel slip and applies individual brakes to the slipping wheel(s) and can reduce excess engine power until traction is regained.

Height-Adjustable Seat Belts: Allows passengers to raise and lower the shoulder belt to a comfortable level.  Encourages seat belt usage by offering a more comfortable fit.

High Intensity Discharge (HID) Headlamps: High Intensity Discharge headlamps provide approximately three times the light output of conventional reflector lamps for improved nighttime illumination.

HomeLink® Universal Home Security System Transceiver: The HomeLink can store three separate transmitter radio frequency codes to operate garage door openers, security gates, security lighting and other radio-controlled devices.

Inflatable Knee Blocker: The inflatable knee blocker is an air bag that deploys whenever the primary driver air bag deploys, helping position the driver relative to the primary air bag.

Inside Emergency Trunk Release: Featuring a glow-in-the-dark release handle, the inside emergency trunk release can be activated in the event that a person or a child is inadvertently trapped in a vehicle trunk.

Interior Head-Impact Protection: Interior pillars above the belt line, instrument panel, windshield and rear window headers, roof and side rail structures, and shoulder-belt turning loops are specifically designed to limit head-impact forces.

Knee Bolsters: The lower instrument panel and the glove-box door are designed to position the occupant properly, enabling the air bags to work effectively.

Occupant Classification System (OCS): The OCS measures the conditions for activation or deactivation of the front passenger-side air bag based upon the weight of the occupant.

Octagonal Frame-Rail Tips: Octagonal tips are designed to collapse rearward in a controlled manner during a frontal or offset front impact.

ParkSense™ Rear Back-up System: Assists when driving at low speeds in reverse to detect stationary objects. This system consists of visible (lights when the driver looks at the inside rearview mirror) and audible warnings for the driver.

Power-Adjustable Pedals: Allows brake, accelerator and clutch (where equipped) pedals to move toward or away from the driver. This helps the driver achieve a safe and comfortable seating position for improved vehicle control.

Remote Keyless Entry: The remote keyless entry locks and unlocks doors, turns on interior lamps. If the vehicle is equipped with a vehicle-theft security alarm, the remote also arms and disarms that system.

Seat Belt Pretensioners: During a collision, the impact sensors initiate the front seat belt pretensioners to immediately remove slack from the seat belts, thereby reducing the forward movement of the occupant's head and torso.

Sentry Key® Engine Immobilizer: This utilizes an engine key that has an embedded transponder with a preprogrammed security key code. When the key is inserted into the ignition the controller sends a random number to the transponder and the engine is allowed to start. If the correct key is not used, the engine will shut off after only a few seconds.

SmartBeam® Headlamps: Intelligent headlamp system that adjusts to ambient light and oncoming traffic to deliver maximum lighting.

Supplemental Side-Curtain Air Bags: Side-curtain air bags extend protection to all outboard front- and rear-seat passengers, including third-row outboard passengers in vehicles equipped with third-row seating. Each side air bag has its own impact sensor in order to autonomously trigger the air bag on the side where the side impact occurs.

Tire Pressure Monitoring (TPM): The system includes pressure-sensor modules that are integrated within the valve stems of all four road wheels. Each module sends continuous radio-frequency signals to a receiver and the system informs occupants when the pressure is too low.

UConnect™ Hands Free Communication System: The UConnect system uses Bluetooth® technology to provide voice-activated wireless communications between the customer's compatible cellular telephone and the vehicle's on-board receiver. The hands-free option promotes safety, freedom, value and flexibility.
